When choosing cleaning products, you frequently encounter terms like ‘pH-balanced,’ ‘neutral formula,’ or ‘alkaline cleaner.’ But what do these really mean, and why does the pH value of a cleaning product matter so much for its performance? Understanding this seemingly technical topic can make a significant difference in everyday cleaning practice.
pH is a scale that measures how acidic or basic (alkaline) a solution is, ranging from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral — the value of pure water. Values below 7 indicate acidity, while values above 7 indicate alkalinity. The scale is logarithmic, meaning each step represents a tenfold change in concentration. For example, a product with pH 9 is ten times more alkaline than one with pH 8.
Different types of dirt have different chemical structures, and pH directly determines how effectively they can be broken down. Alkaline cleaners (pH 8–14) are effective against organic soils such as grease, oil, protein residues, and food stains. This is why most kitchen and laundry detergents are alkaline. Acidic cleaners (pH 1–6), on the other hand, are effective against mineral-based soils such as limescale, rust, and hard water deposits. Bathroom descalers and limescale removers typically fall into this category. Neutral cleaners (pH 6–8) are gentle enough for sensitive surfaces and everyday use, though they offer limited effectiveness against heavy soils.
Choosing the right pH is not just about cleaning performance — it also protects the surfaces being cleaned. Highly alkaline products can damage aluminum and certain natural stone surfaces. Strongly acidic products can corrode metals and degrade grout between tiles. Selecting a product with the appropriate pH range for the specific surface is as important as its cleaning power.
Extreme pH values can also pose risks to the people using the products. Very acidic or very alkaline substances can cause skin and eye irritation. This is why professional cleaning products always specify pH values, recommended dilution ratios, and necessary personal protective equipment in their Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
